About Hiten Futawa Noh

Hiten Futawa Noh began 30 years ago with a 12-year cycle event held by Shonosuke Okura. It was restarted on January 8, 2023, from Taga Taisha in Shiga Prefecture. The next event will be held on February 8, 2024, at the Naikū Joi Stage of the Ise Grand Shrine, where Nohgaku will be dedicated. The reinitiated Hiten Futawa Noh plans to hold a Nohgaku dedication once a year, either on an outdoor Noh stage at shrines and temples or on a constructed stage. In 2024, we plan to dedicate Nohgaku by producing restored musical instruments and stage decorations.

A commemorative workshop will be held at the Isuzu Academy in Ise City in conjunction with the Noh dedication at Ise Jingu on February 8, 2024. We cordially invite you to participate.

  • Current State of Ise Crafts

    February 5th (Mon) 13:00 - 14:30

Listen to the present state of traditional crafts, including Ise washi (Japanese paper) and Ise hemp, and unravel the reality of traditional crafts in the area. The stories from the bearers of tradition toward the future may become clues for us living in the present.

    Listener: Shonosuke Okura
(Noh Performer, Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Properties, Representative Director of The Reiwa Culture Repository Foundation)

  • Jingu and Performing Arts

    February 5th (Mon) 15:30 - 17:00

The Sacred Day when Amaterasu Omikami Settled at the upper reaches of the Isuzu River after a long journey, as described in the "Yamato-hime-no-mikoto Seiki", was celebrated with all-night festivities of music, dance, and singing. The serene sounds of the flowing river and the sacred celebration in the solemn forest must have surely captivated the hearts of those present. The relationship between Jingu and the performing arts encompasses both the aspect of religious ceremonies and the aspect where people shape their hearts in praise and dedication to the great deity. I would like to discuss mainly about Ise Sarugaku, the Noh song "Ema", and local Shishi Lion Dance and Okina Dance among other topics.

    Lecturer: Haruo Sakurai
    (Emeritus Professor, Kogakukan University)

  • Tracing the Journey of Amaterasu Omikami and Yamatohime-no-mikoto

The long journey of Amaterasu Omikami and Yamatohime-no-mikoto is wrapped in many miracles and mysteries. However, this long journey is deeply connected to the establishment of the Ise Jingu and the foundation of the Yamato sovereignty. Let us explore the hidden meanings of this journey, unraveling texts such as the Nihon Shoki and the Yamato-hime-no-mikoto Seiki.

    Lecturer: Masayuki Ikeda
(Emeritus Professor, Waseda University; Comparative cultural studies scholar; Translator; Director of The Reiwa Culture Repository Foundation)

Hiten Futawa Noh Symposium

"What Era are We Living in for the Future?"
- The Reason Hiten Futawa Noh Performs Nohgaku Dedication

A symposium will be held on the day before the dedication to deepen the understanding of "Traditional Craftsmanship" and "Dedication Culture".

This is an attempt to hear from experts in various fields about the current state of inheritance of traditional skills. Although such attempts have been made in the past, our goal is to come together in Ise and bring forth things that are disappearing or being lost in order to find clues on how we should proceed in the future.

This symposium is not an exercise in nostalgia. It's an examination to see if the DNA that has been deeply ingrained in us from ancient times still exists. Together with a diverse audience, we hope that the dedication of Hiten Futawa Noh in Ise will contribute to the strong, deep inheritance and continuation of our living culture and traditions into the future. We look forward to your participation.
